Day 1 – Bowness-on-Solway to Carlisle
Distance: 14miles / 22.5km
Time: 5.5 hours (add 25% extra time for stops)
Accommodation Options: Carlisle City Hostel £21pp, Cartref £40-45pp or £38-65 sgl , Asheigh House £40-50pp or £50sgl, Abberly House £40pp £40sgl, Travel Lodge £26+, Ibis Hotel £40+.
Where I stayed: (Bowness) Lindow Hall Bunk House £14 per night, (Carlisle) Brooklyn House £45 pp or £60 sgl.
Places to Eat: Greggs, Costa, Mcdonalds, The Old Engine House, Foxes, Pizza Bravo and Home & Away to name a few.
Day 2 – Carlisle to Walton
Distance: 11miles / 17.5km
Time: 4 hours (add 25% extra time for stops)
Accommodation Options: Florries on the Wall dorm £24pp or £58 for private room, Low Rigg B&B £80 per room or £60 sgl, Greenacres £30pp or £40sgl, Old Vicarage Brewery £37.50pp or £60 sgl.
Where I stayed: Sandysike Camp Site & Bunk House £7 for camping £15 for bunk house. They will also cook you dinner and breakfast for a fee if you pre-order.
Places to eat: The Reading Room Café 10am – 4pm.
Day 3 – Walton to Steel
Distance: 15.5miles / 25km
Time: 7 hours (add 25% extra time for stops)
Accommodation Options: Winshields Campsite £10 for one person and tent or £15 for two people and one tent, YHA £20-25pp or £30 for a private room, Vallum Lodge B&B £45pp (they will do an evening meal for you).
Where I stayed: Twice Brewed Inn (0.5 miles from the path) £55pp or £90 sgl.
Places to eat: Twice Brewed Inn.
Day 4 – Steel Rigg to Chollerford
Distance: 13miles / 21km
Time: 5.15 hours (add 25% extra time for stops)
Accommodation Options: The Hadrian’s Wall Hotel from £45pp or £70sgl, The George Hotel from £48pp or £85 sgl.
Just before Chollerford near the Hadrian Wall Hotel, the local council allows one night camping on the village green free of charge, you need to seek permission beforehand from clerk@wall-pc-gov.uk. There are public toliets near by but no other facilities.
Where I Stayed: Riverside Camping £10 honesty box including the use of showers and toliets.
Places to Eat: The Hadrian’s Wall Hotel, The Riverside Kitchen (closes at 4pm), The George Hotel.
Day 5 – Chollerford to Heddon on the Wall
Distance: 15miles / 24km
Time: 7 hours (add 25% extra time for stops)
Accommodation Options: Heddon Lodge £47.50 pp or £95 sgl, Hadrian Hideout (converted garage) £24.50pp or £95 sgl, Hadrian’s Barn £47.50pp or £65 sgl.
Where I stayed: Houghton North Farm bunk house, £30pp or £35 sgl.
Places to eat: Tree Tuns, The Swan (we ordered a takeaway from a local Chinese!)
Day 6 – Heddon on the Wall to Wallsend
Distance: 15miles / 24km
Time: 5 hours (add 25% extra time for stops)
Accommodation Options: (Newcastle, Wallsend is a 5 minute metro stop from Wallsend): Newcastle YHA £10 for a week day £20-£30 on Fri – Sun. Quayside Travel Lodge from £30.99, Central Travel Lodge from £24.99, Copthorne Hotel from £37.50pp or full rate for sgl, Motel One from £34.50pp or £59 sgl, County Hotel £35pp or £59 sgl.
Places to Eat: Grainger Market, Hadrian’s Tipi (dog friendly), Chinatown.
